How to find and remove a dead Fort Collins skunk
Colorado skunks are scavengers that live in close proximity to humans. On occasion, you will find a dead skunk on your property. You might also suspect that there is a dead skunk in your home. As skunks often enter crawl spaces and nest under porches you might need to go in search of the culprit.
Finding the carcass
The most obvious sign of a dead Fort Collins skunk will be the smell. After a few days, the body will start decomposing and the smell will permeate your home. When looking for the body, follow your nose. You will want to start looking at places that the skunk was able to gain access to. This includes under the porch, inside the garage or shed, and under your home. Any space that is large enough for a cat to enter will allow a skunk to enter.
What to do with the carcass
Once you have found the carcass, you will need to remove it. Be careful not to touch the dead Colorado animal without protective gear. You will need to wear long sleeves, and it is good to wear gloves that protect you from contact. If possible wear a surgical mask that will keep you from breathing in the fumes. Pick the carcass up and place it inside a plastic bag. It would be advisable to use more than one bag. Close it well so that nothing can leak out. You cannot bury the bag as it will attract scavengers. Make sure not to throw it in the garbage either. You will need to contact someone to collect the body so that it can be incinerated.
Look for babies
If you have found a female Fort Collins skunk make sure that there are no babies close by. They will be unable to look after themselves and will also die if not looked after. Place the babies in a warm box and take them to a wildlife rehabilitation center.
Can a dead Colorado skunk spray you?
If the anal glands are filled with fluid, they can still spray you. Be careful not to compress the glands, or you will be sprayed.
What now?
Disinfect the area and clean it properly. Insects and maggots will be present if there is a dead Fort Collins animal. You do not want these to infect your home. Make sure to get rid of all of them.
Who to contact
There are companies that you can phone that will collect the carcass and dispose of it without you having to do anything.
